Prime Minister, Madav Kumar Nepal laid the fundation stone of
the National Sports Academy at Gauritar, Makawanpur on june 11,
2009.
PM vowed to provide necessary help to complete the Academy, the
first of its kind in Nepal. Accepting the fact that the sports
was never in government's priority list, the PM also appealed
the locals to contirbute in the construction of the Academy. He
also added that Nepali sports had failed to progress as the players
were being missused.
The National Sports Council sports' governing body of the country
has estimated to complete the project in 5 years and at the cost
of Rs. 1.5 billion. The NSC is contructing the Academy on the
23 acres of land in Gauritar, Hetauda. The site is located 6 kms
east of the main city of Hetauda and was used as a venue for the
first inter city which was allocated to build multipurpose sports
covered Hall some 25 years ago.
The NSC has planned to begin the first phase of the ambitious
project at the cost of Rs. 20 million. The first phase includes
fencing the whole area, preparing a football field and constructing
a hostel. The NSC has aimed to build indoor and outdoor facilities
for almost all the sports disciplines, hostel and recreation centre
within the academy. Apart from the pratice ground for cricket,
the Academy will have swimming pool, judo, gymnastic halls and
multipurpose covered Hall. The academy will also incorporate the
academic programmes, graduation and post graduation in all the
sports displinces, sports research units and training for players
and coaches.
NSC is funding the project from the money it saved from the recently
held Fifth National Games. The NSC had set a side Rs. 250 million
to conduct the games. The NSC has planned to raise Rs. 11.5 million
per year from the local tax from Makawanpur district.
